School Starts Tomorrow...Now What???
Although it would be great to have a full  week or two to prepare your classroom without meetings or in-services to attend, that is usually not the case.  So what happens when you have only 1 day left and the kids are coming tomorrow?  Of course the list of recommendations is long, however, here is a quick last minute schedule for those who might need it.
8:00 Morning Structured Independent Activity (one bin with easy to do puzzles, manipulatives or dry erase boards with writing or prewriting activities) ,then Morning Circle

9:00 Reading (20 minutes of a group story and hands-on art activity related to the story, 40 minutes of reading small groups working on each student’s individual bin which holds their reading related tasks)

10:00 Math (30 minutes Large group with a book about numbers, counting activity with blocks or other manipulatives, hands-on activity with glue construction paper and a targeted number, then 30 minutes of small group math working on each student’s individual bin which holds their math related tasks)

11:00 Lunch and Recess (Gross Motor Activity)

12:00 Sensory Activity (30 minutes of play with sensory items like lotion, shaving cream, water, sensory toys, at a table, then Science Lesson (30 minute activity where you talk about autumn, cut leaf shapes, use paint to mix colors to make fall colored leaves, keep the pain store behind you and use only what you need at the time)

1:00 Independent Work at Individual Work Stations (30 minutes of working on structured tasks that the child has already mastered,  such as matching, sorting, placing items in a container, or puzzles) then Art (30 minutes of an art lesson related to coming back to school.)
2:00 Handwriting/Fine Motor Activities/ Read Alouds 3:00 Closing Activity to review the day

To be able to complete this schedule, you will need the basic items in the class:
-a transition box with small, easy to clean up, toys to allow the students to access while waiting for the next lesson
-a sensory box filled with sensory related items
-independent work stations-3 small group areas-1 large group areas
-a bin for each student with something in it to work on (for the first day add what you can then customize it tomorrow)
-a lesson bin for each area with the materials inside and ready (Math Group, Reading Group, Science Lesson, Art Lesson, 2:00 Activity)

QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE YOUR STUDENTS ENTER THE ROOM
Hi Everyone,
School is beginning for many of us and now is the time to get our classrooms in shape and ready for our students.  Each year whether you are new at this or whether you have some experience in this area, teachers are still wondering about how that first day of school will go.  Well, we have some links to materials to help guide you through that process.  The first is a list of questions to ask yourself as you are preparing your room for your students.  This list was created by a teacher, Debbie, in Maryland and is a great resource.  It is found on page 8 of our August Autism Classroom Magazine:

We also have a list of items needed in a Special Education Classroom that has students with Autism:
